Dental Extractions and Wisdom Teeth at Corrimal Dental
At Corrimal Dental, we believe in maintaining a conservative approach to dental care. As a result, we do everything within our power to keep a patient’s natural tooth, rather than resorting to more invasive procedures. In some cases, however, there may be no other option but to remove the problematic tooth in order to save the patient from further pain and discomfort.
Our dental extractions and wisdom teeth removal are gentle, precise, and highly-successful procedures.
Do You Require an Extraction?
There are a number of reasons why a patient may require their problematic tooth to be removed. These include:
- Previous trauma which has caused irreversible damage
- Severe tooth decay leading to loss of natural tooth structure or infection
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- A tooth that has not responded positively to root canal therapy
Additionally, it is quite common for a patient to require one or more of their wisdom teeth to be extracted. Wisdom teeth (also known as the third set of molars) are the last set of teeth to erupt in the mouth, usually occurring between the ages of 17 and 25. Just some of the reasons why a wisdom tooth may require removal include:
- If there is insufficient room for them to erupt
- Teeth misalignment
- The wisdom teeth becoming trapped under the gum line, preventing them from erupting
- Bite abnormalities
- Roots growing in incorrect positions
Please keep in mind that delaying a necessary extraction can lead to more complex and costly issues down the track. If you’re experiencing pain, discomfort, or any of the signs listed above, it is important that you seek treatment from our team of oral health care professionals as soon as possible.
The Tooth Extraction Procedure
Thankfully, the extraction procedure is relatively simple and straight-forward, although this largely depends on the amount of teeth being extracted and their position (i.e. if they have erupted above the gum line or remain below it). Simple extractions can be performed one-by-one in our practice using local anaesthetic to ensure the patient’s comfort and pain management. More complex procedures, however, can be removed under general anaesthetic at an off-site surgery.
